The book-case holds the service books and hymn books that are handed to the congregation as they arrive for each service by the sides-persons.

Each church usually has a rota of their members who volunteer to act as sides-persons. The sides-persons main duty is to welcome people to the services and to make sure that they have the correct hymn and service books for the service. They will show people to their seats and be available to answer any questions that may arise. During the service they take the offertory bags around the congregation to receive their collection. At the end of the service they collect the books and make sure that the church is left ready for the next service.
